San Marcos Ministers Association Meeting

January 11, 2011 – 12:00pm

Present for Meeting:

Roberto Cepeda, Jim Lanning, Robert Rodriguez, Mike McClung, Gary Smith, Mike Schlimgen, Gary Gooch, Merlin Starr, Michael Dobbs, Robin Steele, Paul Buntyn, Robert Smith, Sara Seablom, Roger Hager, Jason Bolinger, Dr. Lewis Alexander

Robin called meeting to order at 12:09 pm.

Welcome of members and guests

Prayer Requests

• Merlin – son-in-law, Norm, in New York preparing for stem cell transplant.  40%-50% success rate. Fighting Lymphoma
• Robert’s wife’s (Connie) kids struggling with negative influence of biological Father
• Mike – family in church living in poverty.  Solid Rock has helped and helped, new baby on the way, husband needs a job.
• Gary – heart surgery scheduled for late February, leaking mitro-valve.
• Powerhouse Christian Center needs a new building – about 5,000 square feet.

Treasurer’s Report

• Balance of $63.26 to start the year
• 38 decisions to follow Christ from Giving Hope (reported by Mike Schlimgen).
• Dues are due ($20 cash received from Sonshine, Merlin Starr and Paul Buntyn, $20 check 1417 received from Bob Smith – Powerhouse Christian Center, check 7945 from Gary Gooch, check 1642 from Michael McClung).
• Merlin Starr motions, Tom Ray seconds to accept treasures report.  Vote passes.

Old Business

• Unified letter report to educate congregations on the SMMA.

New Business

• Update Contact Information
• Non-Christian Ministers are welcome to attend our monthly meetings, but are not able to be a voting member.

Presentation

• Dr. Lewis Alexander, Twogether in Texas
• State has gotten involved in the marriage education business.  Passion to connect couples with problems with churches to connect relationally.
• Any couple that wants free marriage education, the state has to provide it.
• Dr. Alexander looks for faith-based pre-marital curriculum that is state approved.
• Trying to get free workshops going in San Marcos.  Look for churches who will adopt apartment complexes.  Less than 2% of apartment complexes are churched.
• February 5^th, Solid Rock is hosting a free workshop.  Communication skills, conflict resolution skills, intimacy, financial issues, etc. Want to do 8 workshops between now and August.  “Keeping Marriages Healthy” curriculum. If anyone wants to host a workshop, contact Dr. Alexander. Your church can personalize the event and be involved as much as you want, or you can just open the doors, and they’ll provide everything.
• January 28^th or January 29^th opportunities to be trained as a workshop leader in Austin.
• They want to work with universities, corporations.
• Josh McDowell coming to Austin February 3^rd. How to reach next generation.  Speaking at Great Hills Baptist in Austin.

Announcements

• Hays Nursing has services every day including Catholic or protestant services on Sundays.  Presentation next month on February 23^rd.
• Bed and Breakfast in Comfort Texas gives two free nights a year to clergy.  “The Haven”.  Reduced rate for churches who want to have a retreat.
• Gary Smith – 4 or 5 churches working together to bring Ken Medina in concert. July 3^rd at 5 pm.
• Citizens of Heaven Summit May 20-21^st.  Powerhouse hosting at Convention Center.

• Paul Buntyn – Earl Mosely banquet in his honor at TXST on February 4^th.  Tickets $20.  Mayor is the guest speaker.
• Barry Bynum teaching worship leading from guitar class at Hill Country Church.
