February 2010 Minutes

February 9, 2010

I.Call to order

President Pastor Robin Steele called to order the regular meeting of the San Marcos Ministerial Association at 12:05 pm.

II.Opening Prayer                                                                                                       Opening prayer was led by Robert Rodriguez from Redwood Baptist Church.

III.Introduction of members & guest

Our President welcomed those present and asked for each member to state their name and what church or ministry they represented.  He gave a special welcome to representatives from Southside Community Center.

IV.Presentation from Southside Community Center

The representatives from Southside Community Center were:  Joshua Rhodes, Yvonne Paris, and Alex Marmolejo.  The presentation consisted of a power point presentation by Mr. Joshua Rhodes and Yvonne Paris on the work that Southside Community Center is doing for and around the community which consists of:  Holiday Programs, Specific Assistance, Summer Work Camp and on the retirement center, Sunrise Village.  They also have two other facilities that were created to help the needy; the Thrift Store and a Family Homeless Shelter.  Mr. Alex Marmolejo, manager for the shelter then spoke on the Homeless Shelter and how they are helping people get back on their feet by providing temporary housing and also helping people find jobs.  He also talked about the Railroad Ministry which is a ministry that provides a Bible study every Thursday at the gazebo near the railroad track by the donut shop.  He shared that at times they have up to 30-40 people show up to the Bible study. Joshua Rhodes told us that if we wanted more information on other services that Southside Community Center has to offer we could visit their website at; www.southsidecommunitycenter.org.

V.Prayer Request

Pastor Chad Carlton asked for prayer request and the following were given:  Pastor Jenna Heart from 1st UMC had back surgery, Pastor Josephine Mills from Wesley AME Chapel asked for prayer since she is new to her congregation and San Marcos. Chaplain Merlin Starr thanked the Lord for giving him another year of life; he celebrated his birthday last week.  Father Bruce Wilson praised the Lord also for their new building project.  His prayer request was that God would help his congregation redirect their focus on their ministry.  He announced the dedication of the Sanctuary on Sunday, February 14, at 2:00 pm.  Chaplain Roger Hagen from the CTMC Hospice Department’s prayer request was that the Lord provide them with a bigger facility since they have out grown the present one.

VI.Minutes from last meeting                                                                                    The minutes from our regular meeting of the SMMA that was held on January 12, 2010 meeting were presented. Our President announced that since the minutes were posted on our web page for us to review he gave everyone present time to review the minutes.  Since there were no corrections, a motion was made by Pastor Chad Carlton and second by Chaplain Merlin Starr to accept the minutes as presented.  Motion passed.

VII.Treasurer’s Report

The treasurer’s report was presented by Pastor Chad Carlton.  Father Bruce Wilson made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as it was presented and second by Pastor Tom Ray.  Treasurer’s report was accepted as it was presented.

VIII.Old Business

Pastor Jim Lanning from Redwood Baptist Church reported on the Salvation Bell Ringers.  He shared that they collected $10,000. more than last year.  He thinks that it was due to expanding the territory to the City of Kyle.

He reported on Reclaim Your Name which helps assist people to retrieve their identity through obtaining birth certificates and picture I.d. Cards at no cost to the individual.

He also reported on The GoodNews Clubs, a ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship that Redwood Baptist Church is hosting in 5 different elementary schools.  He said that 7 local churches are helping them with this ministry.   He passed out brochures on the two ministries.

San Marcos Ministerial Association 2010 Programs:  Father Bruce Wilson passed out a handout for review with a list of possible groups that could come give a presentation at our monthly meeting.  Our meetings are from February to May and then from September to December.  On October we have Dr. Arlene Taylor scheduled for our Clergy Conferences as our guest speaker.  He said that he is open for suggestions on future programming at our SMMA meetings.

Baccalaureate Service- Our President Robin Steele reported on the date and that Pastor Paul Buntyn will again be organizing this event for us.  The Baccalaureate Service will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the San Marcos High School Auditorium at 6:00 pm.

Ministerial Support-Our President reported that we will have discussion on what ministries we will be supporting throughout the year at our next meeting.

IX.  Announcements/Adjournment

Pastor Santiago Heredia reminded the pastors on the 2010 Census that will take place on April 1st.   He passed out The 2010 Census and the faith-based community: Be counted in 2010 notebook.

Pastor Robert Smith then reminded the pastors to announce to the members of their congregations to go out and vote. He mentioned that last voting turn out was very low.

Meeting was adjourned at 1:06 p.m. with a closing prayer by Pastor Chad Carlton.
